If you’re considering getting your degree or MBA in Brisbane, it’s an ideal destination! From the affordable cost of living to the abundance of career opportunities, it’s a great place to live and study in.
Now let’s take a look at what Brisbane has to offer its students!
The Benefits of Studying in Brisbane
From the city’s world-class universities to its vibrant lifestyle, there are many reasons why Brisbane is an ideal study-abroad destination. Check out the following benefits of studying in Brisbane.
1. World-Class Education
According to the QS World University Rankings 2022, three of Brisbane’s universities are ranked in the top 100 universities in the world!
- University of Queensland ranks 47th
- Queensland University of Technology ranks 213th
- Griffith University ranks 290th
And let’s not forget about the variety of disciplines offered by these universities. Whether you’re interested in business, science, engineering, the arts, or anything in between, there’s a program for you.
The universities and colleges in Brisbane are known for their high academic standards and innovative teaching methods. The lecturers are experts in their fields, and many of them have extensive experience in both academia and industry.
This means that students receive a well-rounded education that is relevant to their chosen field and prepares them for the workforce. One of the things I appreciate most about the education system in Brisbane is the emphasis on practical learning.
Many courses have hands-on components where students can apply what they have learned in real-life scenarios. This approach not only makes learning more enjoyable, but it also helps students develop the skills they need to succeed in their careers.
But don’t just take my word for it – the data is self-evident. According to the Australian Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) survey, Brisbane universities have some of the highest graduate employment rates in the country.
In fact, graduates from the University of Queensland have a 91% employment rate within four months of graduation, while graduates from the Queensland University of Technology have a 90% employment rate.
2. Affordable Cost of Living
Brisbane is one of the most affordable study-abroad destinations in Australia, making it an ideal choice for students on a budget.
According to Numbeo’s Cost of Living Index, Brisbane ranks as the 28th most affordable city out of 568 cities worldwide (as of March 2023). It’s more affordable compared to other major cities in Australia such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.
From accommodation to food, transportation, and entertainment, the cost of living in Brisbane is significantly lower than in other major Australian cities.
For example, a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can cost around AUD 2,982 per month in Sydney, compared to just AUD 2,434 per month in Brisbane.
As for food, a meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant in Sydney can cost around AUD 140, while the same meal in Brisbane is around AUD 130.
Of course, the cost of living will vary depending on your lifestyle and spending habits. However, studying in Brisbane means that you can save money without sacrificing the quality of your experience.
3. Great Weather
With warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine year-round, it’s no wonder why so many people flock to Brisbane to study.
Let’s start with the numbers. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane has an average temperature of around 25°C (77°F) during the summer months and around 16°C (60°F) during the winter months.
This means that you can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities all year round, from hiking and picnicking to swimming and surfing at some of the beautiful beaches nearby. But it’s not just the temperatures that make Brisbane’s weather so great.
The city also boasts some of the cleanest and freshest air in the world, thanks to its location near the Pacific Ocean and the many parks and green spaces scattered throughout the city.
Brisbane has a fine particulate matter concentration of only 7.3μg/m³. This impressive statistic, highlighted in the World Council on City Data’s 2019 report, indicates that the air in Brisbane is remarkably clean and healthy to breathe.
Plus, with an average of over 300 sunny days per year, you’ll never have to worry about being stuck indoors due to bad weather.
4. Cultural Diversity
From festivals and events to restaurants and art, Brisbane is a city that embraces diversity in all its forms. Whether it was through my classes or by exploring the city, I was constantly exposed to new ideas and perspectives.
The cultural diversity of Brisbane is reflected in its population, with over 220 different languages spoken in the city.
This makes it an ideal place to improve your language skills, whether you’re learning English or studying another language. Plus, with so many international students calling Brisbane home, it’s easy to make friends from all over the world.
Aside from the multicultural community, it also has a rich history and indigenous culture. The city has a deep respect for the traditional custodians of the land, the Yuggera and Turrbal peoples, and there are many opportunities to learn about their cultures.
Brisbane’s cultural diversity doesn’t only make it an exciting place to study, but it also prepares students for a globalized world. Based on the QS Best Student Cities 2023 Report, it ranked 24th in the world as the best student city for international students.
5. Reliable Public Transportation
Brisbane’s public transportation system is one of the best in Australia.
But don’t just take my word for it. As per a 2017 report by Arcadis, a global design and consultancy firm, Brisbane boasts of having the most exceptional public transport system in Australia.
Not only is it reliable, but it’s also affordable, making it a great option for those on a budget. One of the best things about Brisbane’s public transportation system is the Go Card which you can use on buses, trains, and ferries throughout the city.
Not only does it make paying for your fares super easy, but it also offers discounts for students. Plus, if you use your Go Card frequently, you can earn rewards such as free trips or discounts on your fares.
Another great thing about public transportation in Brisbane is the extensive network of buses, trains, and ferries. No matter where you’re trying to go, chances are there’s a bus or train that will take you there.
6. Safe and Welcoming Environment
Brisbane has a low crime rate compared to other major cities in Australia. According to the 2021 Global Liveability Index by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Brisbane ranked as the 10th safest city in the world.
That’s impressive, considering there were over 140 cities evaluated based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education, and infrastructure.
Not only is Brisbane safe, but it’s also a welcoming city that celebrates diversity. The people here are friendly, and the city’s welcoming atmosphere makes it easier to adjust to a new environment.
Additionally, the city’s government prioritizes the safety and well-being of its residents and visitors. There are many initiatives and resources available to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
For instance, the Queensland Police Service has a dedicated international student safety unit that offers safety tips, resources, and support to international students.
7. Opportunity to Work While You Study
One of the best things about studying in Brisbane is the flexibility that the city offers when it comes to working part-time.
With a student visa, you are allowed to work up to 40 hours per fortnight during the semester and full-time during our semester break. This means that you can take on casual or part-time jobs without compromising your studies.
Brisbane has a thriving economy, with a range of industries and businesses providing job opportunities for students. From hospitality and retail to internships in your chosen fields, there is no shortage of work opportunities.
The city is also home to some of the biggest companies in Australia, including Flight Centre, Suncorp, and Virgin Australia, providing a great chance to network and develop our careers.
Furthermore, the minimum wage in Australia is one of the highest in the world, which means that you can earn a decent income to support yourself while studying.
In fact, Brisbane was ranked as the 29th best city in the world for international students by QS Best Student Cities 2022. This is due in part to the city’s high minimum wage, making it easier for students to cover living expenses.
8. Abundance of Career Opportunities
For most students, one of the things that they are worried about when they decide to study abroad is finding a job after graduation. They wanted to make sure that the city where they would be studying would offer plenty of career opportunities.
And boy, you might be surprised to learn that Brisbane has an abundance of job prospects!
Firstly, Brisbane is home to many large corporations, such as Suncorp, Boeing, and Virgin Australia, to name a few. These companies offer a variety of job opportunities in fields such as finance, engineering, and aviation.
Let’s not forget about the healthcare industry, which is one of the fastest-growing sectors in Brisbane. It is home to major hospitals, research institutions, and biotech companies, providing many employment options for healthcare-related field graduates.
And the best part? Brisbane’s job market is on the rise as the city’s economy continues to grow. As per Choose Brisbane, it is currently undergoing city-shaping infrastructure projects worth $14 billion and is expected to reach a $239 billion economy by 2041.
