What’s Hoppin’? A Guide to Kangaroo Point Brisbane

If you’re looking for kangaroos, don’t expect to find them at Kangaroo Point. Instead, you’ll find the best spot to watch the sunset, ancient cliffs to climb, a historic bridge (that you can climb, too!), and more!

All these are possible in this inner-city Brisbane suburb. If you’re up for some outdoor recreational activities, you better check out what’s hoppin’ through our travel guide to Kangaroo Point Brisbane!

Things to Know about Kangaroo Point

  • Kangaroo Point sits on an inner-city peninsula on the south side of the Brisbane River and is situated directly across the Brisbane CBD’s east side.
  • The suburb has two key attractions, Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge and the Kangaroo Point Cliffs which is a popular recreational spot for locals and tourists. Activities include rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, picnics, running, and cycling.
  • The Kangaroo Point Cliffs were formed through rhyolite lava flow, which became steeper due to quarrying. These lava deposits, from 230 million years ago in the Triassic Period, filled up an old river valley that formed the Brisbane River.
  • It’s one of the oldest suburbs in Brisbane, and during the penal colony days, it was cleared and used for planting crops. Before British settlement, it was originally inhabited by the Turrbal people.
  • Kangaroo Point is also known to be one of the must-visit spots in Brisbane to watch the sunset. You can climb up the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Lookout to get the best view!

Best Time to Go

Best Time to Go

The best time to go to Kangaroo Point is any time of the year, since Brisbane enjoys wonderful weather almost all-year round. But if you want to experience the best season in the Queensland capital, then you should definitely visit in spring!

Springtime is from September to November where temperatures range from 15°C to 28 °C (59 – 82 °F), and you’ll also get to see the flowers in full bloom! Particularly, you’ll be able to catch the jacaranda trees adorning the city with a sea of purple blossoms.

How to Get Around

How to Get Around

People in Brisbane rely heavily on public transport to get around the city. When going to Kangaroo Point, it’s best to take a bus or ferry.

If you’re coming from the Brisbane CBD, you can ride a ferry for free via the CityHopper or Cross River ferry from the Riverside Ferry terminal or Howard Smith Wharves. You can then hop off at Holman Street terminal and walk from there.

For more information on bus, ferry, or train routes, you can plan your journey through the Translink website

Walking and cycling are also common modes of transport around the area. Cycling from the CBD would be faster, too, as you can conveniently cross the river through the Story Bridge or Captain Cook Bridge.

You can rent a bike or scooter through the Neuron or Beam app. While for long-term rentals, you can check out Riverlife Adventure Centre or Epic Cycles.

Things to See and Do at Kangaroo Point

The view at Kangaroo Point Cliffs is definitely stunning. You can even get the best views from the rocks and get some workout in at the same time!

You can go rock climbing and enjoy the (literally) breathtaking views from the rocks, or if you prefer, start from the top and abseil down from the edge of the cliff!

Riverlife Adventure Centre offers rock climbing and abseiling packages which include a two-hour guided session with a qualified instructor, a safety briefing, and equipment. The rate is at $89 for adults and $79 for kids aged 8 to 16 years old.

This is the perfect adventure for thrill-seekers and first-time climbers as the activity doesn’t require any previous climbing experience.

If you’re up for another challenging climb that offers spectacular views, then scaling the Story Bridge is a must!

It’s one of the most popular tourist activities in Brisbane as you’ll get to climb an iconic city landmark, and at the same time, get a panoramic view of the city and beyond!

Story Bridge Adventure Climb provides several packages wherein you can choose the time of day for your climb. Their most popular package is the Twilight Climb priced at $159 for adults and $143.10 for children (6 – 16 years old) and seniors.

You can also choose the Dawn Climb for the same rates, Day Climb at $129 ($116.10 for kids and seniors), and Night Climb at $139 ($125.10 for kids and seniors).

The Story Bridge Climb tour will be about two hours long with a guide, and it involves climbing 1,088 steps to a height of 80 meters.

This is a great activity that the whole family will enjoy! You can conquer your fears atop a Brisbane icon, learn more about the city’s history, take in the views, and of course, get a memorable photo opportunity, to boot!

You probably know by now that Kangaroo Point is all about getting active. So next up is taking a scenic bike ride by the river!

The Kangaroo Point Bikeway is one of the best and safest bike paths that you can cycle in the city. It’s a four-kilometer long flat and fully-paved path by the river that offers a relaxing and scenic ride away from cars and traffic.

It’s a great activity for the whole family and it’s suitable for small kids who are still learning how to ride a bike. You can even continue pedaling to the City Botanic Gardens and you can cross the river via the Goodwill Bridge or Story Bridge.

If you want to rent a bike for the day, you can check out Riverlife Adventure Centre with rates starting from $35. You can also avail of a one week hire if you’re looking to use the bike for a longer period.

Another option is Epic Cycles, which is a good choice if you’re looking to use a specific type of bike. They have a variety of bikes for hire such as folding bikes, mountain bikes, city bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes, and more, with rates starting from $60.

Meanwhile, electric bikes or scooters are available through the Neuron or Beam app.

Take a break and unwind at the Story Bridge Hotel where you can grab a drink, savor a sumptuous meal, and just relish the experience of spending time in this Brisbane icon.

Built in 1886, then called the Kangaroo Point Hotel, it was one of the seven three-storey hotels that stood in Queensland at that time. In 1940, the name of the hotel was changed to Story Bridge Hotel to coincide with the bridge’s official opening.

The Deery family acquired ownership of the hotel, and since then, it became Kangaroo Point’s well-loved “village pub.” Today, they’re one of the last remaining hotels in Brisbane that’s family-owned and operated.

Locals and tourists alike delight in their delicious food and extensive selection of quality wine and spirits, beers, and more.

Kangaroo Point is the perfect spot to watch the sunset, and why not add in some cocktails, too? You can sip an artfully crafted concoction while taking in spectacular views of the city as the sun dips at Sunsets Rooftop!

This chic rooftop bar takes you to an alluring desert oasis with a menu inspired by diverse culinary traditions that you can find in tropical regions across the globe.

They offer Mediterranean Share Banquets perfect for a group of four that include a selection of dips and bread, protein, salads, and desserts.

You can find them on the rooftop of the Linton Apartments in Kangaroo Point and they’re open Thursdays to Sundays from 12pm – 10pm.

A soothing and sensational live jazz gig could be the perfect thing to cap off your night! Luckily, you can find the Brisbane Jazz Club in Kangaroo Point just by the river!

The Brisbane Jazz Club is a must-visit if you wanna catch live jazz, blues, or soul performances. Established in the 1960s, it has become the hub for live jazz in Brisbane, gaining recognition in the international jazz community for its high-quality music.

The club hosts annual festivals, attracting jazz enthusiasts worldwide. It’s worth noting that it’s also a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to preserving the legacy of jazz by fostering a love for the genre and supporting musicians for future generations.

With a scenic view of the Brisbane River, you can immerse yourself in the city lights while savoring soulful jazz melodies, complemented by a glass of wine or whiskey.
