What’s in Guyatt Park?
Guyatt Park is an outdoor recreational park nestled by the southern banks of the Brisbane River in the suburb of St. Lucia. What sets Guyatt Park apart is Brisbane’s first-ever free outdoor Warrior Course!
Prior to this upgrade, Guyatt Park was already a well-loved neighborhood leisure spot, but with the opening of this exciting course, it drew aspiring ninja warriors of all ages!
This free obstacle course, inspired by the popular Ninja Warrior TV show, features a total of 11 obstacles. These include climbing walls, balance beams, and rings, perfect for teens and adults to test their strength and agility.
Of course, a junior playground can also be found beside the course, close to the picnic and BBQ area, that’s also suitable for big and little kids. It’s been upgraded with swings, slides, climbing structures, monkey bars, log rolls, flying fox, and more.
Beyond the dedicated play areas, Guyatt Park has expansive green spaces ideal for picnics, throwing a frisbee, or simply soaking up the sunshine.
The picturesque riverside location provides stunning scenery, making it a popular spot for relaxation and taking in the city sights. With its diverse offerings, Guyatt Park is a haven for families, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a fun day outdoors.
Location and Accessibility
Guyatt Park in St. Lucia is just off Sir Fred Shonell Drive. It’s only a 20-minute drive from the Brisbane CBD and a short walk from the University of Queensland.
What’s great about it is it’s easily accessible via CityCat ferry and bus as there’s a ferry terminal right by the park as well as a bus stop close by.
The park is wheelchair accessible with public toilets and concrete pathways suitable for wheelchairs. The park has lush surroundings with the junior playground partially shaded, but take note that the Warrior Course does not have any shade.
The Guyatt Park Warrior Course
The Guyatt Park Warrior Course features 11 obstacles designed to test your agility, coordination, and upper body strength.
While designed for kids 12 and up, this course isn’t for the faint of heart. Even fit adults will find it to be quite challenging.
From conquering the initial “Quinn Steps” to navigating balance beams, cargo nets, and swinging monkey bars, the course offers a fun and rewarding experience.
The highlight is undoubtedly the “Field of Rings” and the “Pole Forest,” demanding both grip strength and strategic planning. Unlike the TV show, there’s no water to contend with – just a safe, rubberized soft fall surface for a worry-free experience.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. A handy QR code lets you time your run and compare it with others, adding a touch of friendly competition.
Whether you’re aiming for the fastest time or simply conquering each obstacle, the Warrior Course at Guyatt Park is a guaranteed adrenaline rush.
Here’s a sneak-peek of each obstacle:
- Quinn Steps – Hop across slanted balance beams (Difficulty Level: Hard)
- The Plank – Test your balance and walk across a swinging narrow plank. (Difficulty Level: Average)
- Downward Cargo Net – Cross under or over an elevated cargo net. (Difficulty Level: Hard)
- Cliffhanger – Climb or step across uneven bars. (Difficulty Level: Average)
- Inside Out Bars – Scale through a descending monkey bar. Try not to touch the ground by hooking your feet on the poles at the lower end to get to the next obstacle. (Difficulty Level: Hard)
- Rock Hop – Test your balance and navigate the elevated stepping stones, each one set at different heights. (Difficulty Level: Average)
- Up and Over Mountain Climb Wall – Climb up a rock wall and descend down a cargo net on the other side. (Difficulty Level: Hard)
- Pole Forest – Maneuver through criss-crossing poles (Difficulty Level: Average)
- Field of Rings – Jump up and swing across three rotating rings. (Difficulty Level: Hard)
- Jungle Bars – Scale across an unconventional monkey bar. (Difficulty Level: Hard)
- Rail Climb – Slide down the rails facing forward or backward. (Difficulty Level: Average)
Note:
- While the Warrior Course has been designed for children 12 years and up, adults can join in the fun as well. Younger kids can also play, but with strict adult supervision as the obstacles are quite hard to reach.
- The difficulty level for each obstacle would also depend on your current fitness level. So it’s perfectly alright to slow down or rest in between the obstacles if you need to.
Planning Your Visit
- Hours: You can live out your ninja warrior dreams anytime at Guyatt Park as it’s open 24 hours and admission is free.
- Transport: If you’re bringing a vehicle, there’s a parking area and street parking available. Commuting is easy, too, as there are bus stops nearby and the Guyatt Park ferry terminal is just a quick walk away.
- Amenities: There are biking and walking paths within the park, accessible public toilets, grassy open spaces, picnic tables, benches, and BBQ facilities.
Apart from the Warrior Course, there’s also a traditional junior playground right beside it as well as table tennis tables and other fitness equipment.
- What to Wear: It’s best to wear comfortable exercise clothes and closed shoes that won’t restrict movement.
Safety Tips
The Warrior Course at Guyatt Park offers a thrilling challenge, but safety should always be your top priority. Here are some tips to ensure a fun and injury-free experience:
- Warm Up – Before tackling the course, get your body ready with some light cardio and dynamic stretches. This will increase your blood flow, loosen your muscles, and prepare you for the obstacles.
- Size Up the Challenge – Walk through the course first to familiarize yourself with the obstacles and plan your approach. Look for potential hazards and identify areas where you might need extra focus.
- Know Your Limits – Don’t push yourself beyond your comfort zone. If an obstacle seems too difficult, skip it and move on. There’s no shame in prioritizing safety.
- Mind Your Grip – Wear closed shoes with good traction to ensure a firm grip on the obstacles. Wet or sweaty hands can be slippery, so bring a towel, use hand sanitizer, or better yet, wear gloves for better grip.
- Spot a Friend – If attempting challenging obstacles, have a friend spot you for added safety. They can offer support and help prevent falls.
- Land Softly – Remember, this is not the real Ninja Warrior! Land with control on the soft fall mats and avoid jumping from excessive heights.
- Stay Hydrated – Especially on hot days, bring plenty of water and take regular breaks to rehydrate.
- Listen to Your Body – Don’t ignore any pain or discomfort. If you feel any aches or strains, stop the course and rest.
- Be Respectful – Share the course and be mindful of others. Wait for your turn patiently and avoid hogging obstacles.
