Everything You Need to Know about GJ Walter Park

The first time we set foot in GJ Walter Park, we knew it wasn’t just another foreshore reserve, as it felt like stumbling onto one of Cleveland’s best-kept secrets.

Driving in, the first thing that caught my eye was the row of heritage-listed Norfolk Pines standing tall like sentinels. You can see them from a distance, their spiky silhouettes guiding you straight to the water’s edge.

So if you’re planning to spend a laid-back weekend by the bay, GJ Walter Park is just the spot. Consider this guide as your starting point to discover the best picnic spots, scenic views, and more.

Nestled right on Moreton Bay, this 13.4-acre stretch of green spills effortlessly into the water, where history and pure coastal calm meet.

Walking beneath the shade of the Norfolk Pines feels like stepping into a scene that generations before me must have enjoyed. The park was first gazetted in 1889 and named after George John Walter, a settler who helped shape this bayside community.

Playground & Kids’ Zone

The moment we wandered over to the playground, we could see why it’s the park’s biggest drawcard for kids. Imagine a full-sized, boat-shaped structure dropped right onto the foreshore. This is where little sailors instantly turn into captains of their own Moreton Bay adventure.

For the tiny ones, it’s not overwhelming as there are bucket swings and toddler-friendly spots that let them join in the action at their own pace. But if you’ve got an energetic climber, the giant spider-web frame will keep them busy for ages.

Dog-Friendly Beach & Off-Leash Areas

The first time I unclipped my dog’s lead at GJ Walter Park, it was like watching pure joy in motion. She bolted straight for the water and tail wagging like a helicopter as she joined a pack of equally excited pups chasing waves.

It’s also one of the few 24/7, year-round off-leash beaches in Redlands. At low tide, the beach stretches wide, giving dogs endless space for zoomies and stick chases across the firm sand.

Owners aren’t left out either. Shaded benches and picnic shelters line the shore, and there are dog bubblers for thirsty tongues (and for rinsing sandy paws). Waste bag dispensers and bins are easy to find, which keeps the whole place tidy and welcoming.

Picnic, BBQ & Rest Facilities

Cooking here is just as simple. The electric BBQs are free to use and shaded under shelters, so you’re not scrambling if the weather turns.

The public amenities block is close to the pines and easy to spot. The paved paths connect everything seamlessly. The whole park is pram- and wheelchair-friendly.

Accessibility & Parking

Parking at GJ Walter Park is generally straightforward. But a little strategy goes a long way, especially if you’re aiming for a sunny weekend or a popular holiday afternoon.

The most convenient option is street parking along Shore Street East. It runs directly alongside the park and puts you steps from the playground and picnic areas.

There’s also a small dedicated on-site car park, ideal for those carrying picnic gear or pet supplies. This lot can fill up quickly during peak times, so it’s wise to have a Plan B. The Cleveland Town Center or the ferry terminal car park both offer reliable alternatives.

Pro Tips:

If you’re visiting on a weekend or during school holidays, aim to arrive before 9:00 AM to secure a spot in the small on-site car park.

Keep some coins or a payment card handy in case you need to use timed parking in the town center. Remember that the Cleveland ferry terminal lot is a reliable overflow option if street parking along Shore Street East is full.

To make things easier, you can always drop off passengers or bulky gear at the park entrance before parking further away. This saves you from carrying everything across multiple blocks.

GJ Walter Park is also generally accessible, as it has been designed with accessibility in mind. A network of wide pathways links every major zone, making it easy for prams and mobility scooters to navigate without encountering gravel traps or sudden steps.

Local Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit

Over the years, locals have fine-tuned their visits to GJ Walter Park. These tried-and-true habits can make your day smoother and more enjoyable.

Check the tides before you come. At high tide, the water laps closer to shore, making it ideal for paddling kids and happy dogs who want a swim without trekking far out. At low tide, the exposed sand flats are fun for beachcombing and crab spotting, but swimming can be trickier.

Claim your spot early. Weekends can be lively, especially on sunny mornings. Arriving before the mid-morning rush means you’ll have first pick of shaded picnic tables or prime bay-view benches.

Pack smart. In summer, insect repellent and plenty of water are must-haves. A towel (or two) is handy for sandy kids or a spontaneous splash in the shallows.

Know your dog’s recall. While most of the off-leash beach is safely contained, there are sections without fencing. Make sure your pup listens well before letting them roam freely, especially if they’re tempted by the water.

Stay a while after sunset. If the day’s been hot, the bay breeze at dusk is refreshing, and the lights from nearby Stradbroke ferries give the shoreline a calm glow.
